Step off the metro at Nieuwmarkt and you step into the neighbourhood’s history. Large parts of the old Nieuwmarkt were demolished to build the metro — culminating in fierce riots in 1975. When the station opened in 1980, the resistance was given a permanent place: crumbling walls with protest posters, a wrecking ball, and along the tracks Van Gasteren’s Wortels van de stad, bearing the slogan “We will continue to live here.”
