A Sunday Mural today.
On the side wall of the Haringpakkersbrug, just near Centraal Station, a new mural will appear every six months from this month onwards. With Canvas van Amsterdam, the city centre gains an ever-changing artwork by Amsterdam-based artists.
The first edition is by artist duo @FreelingWaters (Gijs Frieling & Job Wouters). Their mural ‘Vreemdeling Welkom’ reclaims imagery that has been appropriated by nationalist movements and tourists alike: the tricolour, Gothic typography and the Amsterdam city coat of arms. In their own words: “At this spot, an unbroken stream of tourists passes by the improvised sleeping places of homeless Amsterdammers. Confusing feelings deserve to be welcomed. That is why we have dressed our words of welcome in the aesthetics of the herring cart — tricolour, Gothic lettering and shrieking seagulls. Stranger Welcome!”
