At Azartplein, a sea goddess rises from the water: Amphitrite, with flowing hair and raised arms, rides a rearing hippocampus — half horse, half fish — while her son Triton lifts a conch shell to his lips. The bronze fountain, surrounded by boulders and spraying water jets, radiates maritime strength. Originally gifted to the KNSM board in 1956, the work drifted into obscurity until former employees brought it back to the KNSM island in 2009 after years of fundraising.
Today, the sculpture stands in a 50,000-liter basin, illuminated by blue and white spotlights. One of the rocks features a poem by A. Roland Holst, in which Amphitrite is addressed as the timeless guardian of seafaring.
