Between Jan Voermanstraat and Jan Tooropstraat lies a five-meter-long aluminium body: Erotica by Erwin de Vries. This ode to eroticism was unveiled in 1973 and embodies the vital force the artist saw as the essence of life. Rounded and angular forms flow into one another, shaping a stylized female figure that radiates both strength and surrender.
De Vries had 500 kilos of aluminium shipped specially from Suriname — a tangible link between his birthplace and his adopted city of Amsterdam. The work is also technically remarkable: to achieve its scale, the sculpture was internally reinforced with steel.
