Canvas of Amsterdam gives local artists a place in the heart of the city

On the side wall of the Haringpakkersbrug, just near Centraal Station, a new mural by an Amsterdam artist will appear every six months from April 2026 onwards. With Canvas of Amsterdam, the city centre gets a rotating artwork on a steel panel measuring 2.5 by 8.5 metres — visible to the thousands of passers-by who come through here daily.

The project is an initiative by artist Sam Rees of Mokumse Muurtjes and is being realised within the framework of the Aanpak Binnenstad (City Centre Approach). Canvas runs until at least 2030. The first edition is by the artist duo FreelingWaters (Gijs Frieling and Job Wouters); in September 2026 a work by Hedy Tjin will follow. Artists are selected through an independent advisory group from the Amsterdam art world.
