Whoever stares at the sun for too long sees spots before their eyes. Artist Roland Schimmel plays with this optical phenomenon in his intriguing mural on Vinkenstraat. When you focus on the black circles, your own perception becomes part of the artwork. What do you see happening?
Schimmel is known for his (wall) paintings, installations, and animations in which he experiments with the halo effect. His seemingly static artworks are surprisingly interactive: by observing closely, they come to life. Black holes and colorful spots are recurring elements in his work.
This mural, created in 2009 on behalf of the housing association De Key, adds a playful and enchanting touch to the heart of Amsterdam.
