101 namen (101 names)

Martine Neddam

Martine Neddam created the artwork 101 namen (‘101 names’) at the pass-over where the Eerste Van Swindenstraat turns into the Javastraat. If you don’t look up, you would walk past it without noticing the artwork. But if you do, you see a blue sky, with on it 101 names of neighbourhood residents. The artist collected the names by approaching people on the Dappermarkt.

‘The municipality wanted to give this place back to the neighbourhood, through an artwork. I think they had a mural in mind, but I preferred keeping the walls empty. While exploring the area, I noticed how diverse it is. I wanted to translate this into displaying the names,’ says the artist.

This artwork is part of the Sunday Sculptures series that Stadscuratorium Amsterdam posts every Sunday on Instagram.
