178 Bottles, 1 Message

Saskia Hoogendoorn en Lieuwe Martijn Wijnands (De Tijdmakers)

At the station square of Amsterdam Sloterdijk stands 178 Bottles, 1 Message, an artwork by De Tijdmakers (Saskia Hoogendoorn and Lieuwe Martijn Wijnands). The base, a sea buoy, is crowned with 178 illuminated bottles forming a heart. The heart displays the flags of 178 nationalities represented in Amsterdam in 2014, symbolizing the city’s diversity.

Inspired by the words of former alderman Floor Wibaut—“There is but one country: the earth. There is but one people: humanity. There is but one faith: love.”—this artwork celebrates Amsterdam’s rich history.

Every week, het stadscuratorium posts a Sunday Sculpture on Instagram, the story behind an artwork in public space that gives colour to the city of Amsterdam.
