In City Cells, we see a composition of geometric shapes. Based on the dodecahedron, a structure that also occurs in seeds and plants, it floats beneath the passageway at Hoekenrode and Amsterdamse Poort. The work invites us to marvel at connections: between people, between cultures, and between urban and natural structures.
Karin van Dam was inspired by the international identity of Amsterdam-Zuidoost and by the complex patterns of nature. By giving these shapes a place in public space, City Cells shows how art can be a metaphor for community, growth, and interconnectedness — visible to everyone who passes by here every day.
Happy New Year, everyone! 💜
