For this artwork, André Volten intuitively stacked H-beams on top of each other. Volten positioned the H-beams strictly perpendicular to one another, ensuring the artwork aligns only with the X, Y, and Z axes. This allows each viewing angle to offer a different experience while playing with the contrast between open and closed forms—an approach he referred to as ‘crooked holes.’
Construction H-Beam DIN 30 has been located in Sloterpark since 1968 and is one of four artworks by Volten in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. Originally placed near the Stedelijk Museum, it was later relocated. Through his monumental sculptures, often made of steel and granite, Volten has left a lasting impact on the development of public art in the Netherlands.
Every week, het stadscuratorium posts a Sunday Sculpture on Instagram, the story behind an artwork in public space that gives colour to the city of Amsterdam.
