The artwork is so simple and direct, but just as much as these words dictate, they leave open to interpretation. What it is that needs to be done is something the viewer knows best. ‘To get going, start the big work’, says Verheugen, ‘make a cover, declare your love, start a business, call your mother, better the world’. To do something that you think needs to be done, for yourself or for the world.
The flexible scaffolding that makes up the artwork can be used in various ways. First they formed the letters of the ‘DOEIDOEI-machine’ at Schiphol Airport. Since 2011 the call to action DOE IETS stands on the railway overpass in Wibautstraat.
This artwork is part of the Sunday Sculptures series that Stadscuratorium Amsterdam posts every Sunday on Instagram.
