Fête Galante

Hans van den Ban

These giant cones with red optical viber wires on their ends are installed alongside the Weesperstraat, to create a playful interruption in the urban environment.

The sculptures resemble pinecones, but can also be associated with an old fashioned cuckoo clock. The title of the work, Fête Galante, isn’t just randomly chosen: in the 18th century painters depicted celebrations of noblemen in a distinct genre of painting: the Fête Galantes. These scenes were often depicted in an intimate way, joy and love were most important.

Artist Hans van den Ban created another sculpture of tree fruits in Amsterdam: along the Postjeskade he installed ‘Vuurtoren met sinaasappels.’

This artwork is part of the Sunday Sculptures series that Stadscuratorium Amsterdam posts every Sunday on Instagram.
