Cube-Mirror-Poles

Joost van Santen

Two lampposts rise diagonally into the air—one with an orange cube, the other with a blue one. Inside, a mirror creates the illusion of a broken pole. This untitled work by Joost van Santen, located at the intersection of Cornelis Lelylaan and Johan Huizingalaan, is popularly known as the “Satay Skewers.” The artist envisioned it as a gateway to Slotervaart. In 2023, the blue cube was replaced with a lighter shade after storm damage. A subtle play of perspective and reflection in Amsterdam Nieuw-West.

Every week, het stadscuratorium posts a Sunday Sculpture on Instagram, the story behind an artwork in public space that gives colour to the city of Amsterdam.
