He is standing there as a kind of gatekeeper, in front of the courthouse. It is almost endearing how the friendly giant looks, leaning forward from a height of five meters, to the three symbols in his hand. An arrow, an owl and an acorn, three lucky symbols that represent focus and perseverance, knowledge and wisdom and protection against evil. The clumsy, soft expression of the giant creates a moment of diversion, perspective and consolation for the visitors of the courtroom.
The statue is made by artist Nicole Eisenman, who is mostly known for her paintings in which she plays with a palette of different stylistic references. Relationships, stereotypes, an inclusive society, the body and gender are important themes in her work.
This artwork is part of the Sunday Sculptures series that Stadscuratorium Amsterdam posts every Sunday on Instagram.
