Beneath the streets of Weesperplein lies a hidden face of the city. Luchtspiegelingen presents twelve panels showing fragments of Weesperstraat and Sarphatistraat — not as we usually see them, but viewed from below. Tram tracks, zebra crossings, clouds and passing cars drift by, as if you’re looking up through the ceiling.
This work, a subtle trompe l’oeil by graphic designer and visual artist Matthijs van Dam, marked an important moment in his public art practice and invites travellers to pause and see the city in a way they have never seen it before.
