Schaap met vijf poten (Sheep with five legs)

Gerrit Bolhuis

A sheep with five legs, meant to be climbed on and played with by children, stands alongside the Botteskerksingel. It isn’t immediately clear that the sheep has five legs, it lifts its back legs up in the air, and its fifth leg supports it. The scuplture was made by Gerrit Bolhuis, an artist who studied at the Rijksakademie between 1930 and 1934. In 1934 hew on the Prix de Rome, the oldest and most prestigious prize for young artists and architects in The Netherlands.

This artwork is part of the Sunday Sculptures series that Stadscuratorium Amsterdam posts every Sunday on Instagram.
