Just near our office, opposite Pakhuis de Zwijger, runs the Jan Schaeferbrug — and across from it lies a railway underpass. Those who walk through it in the evening may encounter Het Licht van Jan, a light installation by Matthias Oostrik.
The work is based on a statement by alderman Jan Schaefer: ‘Is this policy, or has someone actually thought about this?’ That question translates into light projections that cast grids, shadows and moiré patterns across the walls and floor. Cold white light, sharp against the orange glow of the street lamps.
But the work does more than look beautiful: Oostrik designs installations that respond to passers-by, that contribute to a sense of safety, and that are built to last.
Art that shapes its surroundings — every evening, again and again.
