The Swarm

Paul Vendel

At the western edge of Amsterdam, at the entrance to De Aker, The Swarm by Paul Vendel hovers. A curved artwork of stainless steel, a gateway to the city, and a reminder of what once was. Before De Aker was built in 2004, this place was home to birds and insects—now their forms still flicker in the small reflectors that catch the light of passing cars, like fireflies in the night.

Every week, het stadscuratorium posts a Sunday Sculpture on Instagram, the story behind an artwork in public space that gives colour to the city of Amsterdam.
