On the busy intersection at Rietlandpark, four tables climb over each other. They seem to refer to the busy traffic flow in this business district.
In the artwork ‘Voor de bijen (For the bees)’ lives a population of bees that joined the crowded urban environment. Together with a city ecologist, artist Frank Mandersloot designed a landscape plan for flowerbeds in the area, as food for the bees. The project took nine years to complete. Built on the poles that the city of Amsterdam is built on, and inhabited by a colony of bees that uses around 28 kilometers as their living area, one could argue that this is one of the biggest artworks in the world.
This artwork is part of the Sunday Sculptures series that Stadscuratorium Amsterdam posts every Sunday on Instagram.
