Amsterdam Zuid, in collaboration with Amsterdamse Fonds voor de Kunst, commissioned five artists to design a new entrance for the Amstelpark in 2006. The goal was to strengthen Amstelpark’s function as an amusement park, with the ambition to make the entrances practical and functional, as well as artistically designed.
One of the results was the entrance ‘De Borcht’ by Joost Conijn, situated on the backside of Amstelpark, next to the windmill. The artwork consists of a large fencing structure with a tilting middle part that hinges in an angle of 45 degrees. It was created with the idea of a pop up book in mind; by opening the fence a spatial image is created, built up of unfolding surfaces that are otherwise flat.
