In 1976 a commission was set out by the Dienst Metro for the metro station Weesperplein and Gaasperplas, to which 198 artists responded. Antoine Mes was one of the winners.
The form, colour and position of the brick bags and suitcases are so natural, that it might take a while before you notice them. They tell their own story in their own inconspicuousness. The artwork consists of ten parts: four suitcases, five bags and a duffel bag. Initially there was an eleventh part; a brick ball. This must’ve been a heavy object, but it somehow got lost years ago.
The travel bags can be the starting point of many stories about movement and migration, about orphaned objects that didn’t reach their destination – or did they?
