A reflection on shelter and liberation: Demeure 4 by Henri Etienne-Martin was inspired by a medieval temple in Lanleff, where he stayed after being freed from a prisoner-of-war camp at the end of World War II. The sculpture is part of a pivotal series in his body of work. In 1962, it was exhibited at the World’s Fair in Seattle, at the invitation of Willem Sandberg, then director of the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Cast in bronze specifically for the museum’s collection, Demeure 4 now stands along the Sloterweg.
Every week, het stadscuratorium posts a Sunday Sculpture on Instagram, the story behind an artwork in public space that gives colour to the city of Amsterdam.
