‘Let us remember that every human being, no matter where they come from or go to, carries with them their cultural riches. So that we can experience beauty at all times.’ These are the words of artist Nelson Carrilho, born in Curaçao.
‘Dragers van verre (Carriers from afar)’ shows two figures that carry something on their heads. Everyone who lives somewhere else from where they are born, carries something of that place and culture with them. Physical objects, but also thoughts and habits. The symbol of carrying something on the head originates from African culture. The sculpture is a statement which connects histories and politics with the poetic. The figures are on view in Westerpark.
