Rembo

Bastienne Kramer

Rembo: the large, 3.2 meters high statue glinsters in the sunlight in Rembrandtpark. It is made of green, glazed ceramics with detailed decoration onthe skin; the so-called Frysian notch cut. When artist Bastienne Kramer was asked to make an artwork that would withstand vandalization, she decided that every part of Rembo that would be damaged over the years is to be replaced by bronze. Over the years, the artwork will become a portrayal of vandalism. The stadscuratorium advised about the repair works of this statue in 2021.

Bastienne Kramer makes sculptures which she exhibits as individual pieces or installation works. The subjects of her work are mostly inspired by popular culture. She subverts and politicises sexist imagery that typically confirms traditional gender roles. Her work deals with power relationships in communities.

This artwork is part of the Sunday Sculptures series that Stadscuratorium Amsterdam posts every Sunday on Instagram.
