A life-size hippo, it can be found on IJburg! The artwork has a size of 6 x 3 meters and depending on the water level in the lock, the hippo is partly or completely visible.
Commissioned by the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts, artist Tom Claassen has created a hippopotamus. It looks like a cuddly toy stitched together and has a high petting factor, but the special rubber it is made of can absorb bumps from boats.
According to the artist, a hippo belongs in the amphibious atmosphere between land and water; the Hippo is actually at the bottom of the IJmeer.
This artwork is part of the series of Sunday Sculptures that Stadscuratorium Amsterdam posts on Instagram every Sunday.
