Yellow Wings

Loes van der Horst

The artwork “Yellow Wing” in a pond in Bijlmermeer is a remake of a previous piece, “Bijlmobiel,” which was placed in 1976 just around the corner. This Bijlmobiel was designed by Loes van der Horst. It was a spatial construction with overlapping nets that were stringed up with steel cables between aluminium masts. When the area around the artwork was renovated the Bijlmobiel had to go, and it was placed in a depot.

In 2011 the municipality wanted to restore the artwork. Unfortunately the different parts didn’t stand the test of time. Van der Horst (who was 90 at the time) and engineer Mick Eekhout were asked to make a new design inspired by the Bijlmobiel: Yellow Wings. This is the last artwork made by Van der Horst; she passed away in 2012 and wasn’t able to experience the placement of the piece in 2015.
