“He was such an angel of this city. It was like he was sent by a higher power to make the city more beautiful, more joyful and more fun.”
These were the words used by Theodor Holman in het Parool to honour artist Fabrice Hünd after his sudden departure on the last day of 2021. He made the city more beautiful with his colourful, expressionistic murals and mosaics, but also with his extravagant and colourful appearance. He will be truly missed.
Today we focus on one of his works, ‘Scherven van Beschaving’ (‘Shards of Civilisation’). The artwork is built from thousands of shards which together represent one world. Porcelain, natural stone, mirror glass, fossils and other materials were used in the production of this artwork. Before, in the same place, there was a mural also made by Fabrice, but he decided to make it into a mural after some years of decline. He says the artwork is a melting pot of cultures, like Amsterdam itself.
